Nobody's trying to teach anybody morality. If anything, the guy you were talking to is right. I mean, Jello even says he likes to write about issues from other people's points of view. Not to push his "values" on anyone, but to just be like, "Hey. Look at this. It's happening in the world."

I dont think this is a drug song, but rather a reaction to the sudden onslaught of media and "entertainment" culture, which is endemic nowadays, but was rearing it's ugly head already then. He's asking for escape and offering drugs as an allegorical substitute for avoidance of a society and a television set.
this song is great to expose the shitty guys that need drugs to have courage to do something, and without them are chickenshits.
