Vaughn Monroe was a baritone of amazing talent and emotional range--best known today for his Western repertoire but at ease here with one of Cole Porter's most urbane songs. Monroe made this recording with Jack Marchard's orchestra just a few months before founding his own band.

IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT

In the still of the night
As I gaze through my window
At the moon in its flight
My thoughts all stray to you

In the still of the night
While the world is in slumber
All the times without number
Darling when I say to you,

Do you love me, as I love you?
Are you my life to be, my dream come true?
Or will this dream of mine fade out of sight
Like the moon growing dim, on the rim of the hill
In the chill, still, of the night?

Like the moon growing dim, on the rim of the hill
In the chill, still, of the night...

  • Very glad you enjoy it! Monroe had the voice quality to have succeeded as an opera star--had he chosen that path.

    Best wishes,

    -RR

  • Great rendition. Monroe primarily played trumpet with Marshard, and only occasionally sang. This was done before Monroe started his own band, at Marshard's urging and had his voice retrained to be more "crooner" like.

    One of my favorite recordings/

  • Excellent information, Herb--I appreciate it. I had always loved Vaughn's "Ghost Riders" but only recently discovered his earlier crooning work. A great talent, certainly!

  • Great rendition!

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Very glad you like it too, Corrie. Stay tuned!

  • One of the underrated singers in the business! For that reason Monroe has not really been given his due in the world of music. One of the greats, for sure. And so long as I'm at it, may I ask if anyone can post his timeless pieces, "Let's Get Lost" and "Now It Can Be Told," which I thought for certain would be included here on YouTube?

  • One of my favourite songs. Beautiful voice, nice recording. THANKS!!!

  • A powerful voice, great!

  • Vaughn Monroe demonstrating his well-deserved nickname:

    "Old Leather Tonsils".

Sure, he's great. But to us his voice sounds like a foghorn.

  • @RReady555 How about "Racing With the Moon"?

  • For me this is out of left field - absolutely fabulous - cruisey sound to play again and again. Thanks RR. Graham Melb Aus
