Back in February 2007, we adopted an English Bulldog named Ruby. She was almost blind, had terrible sores, was afraid of everything and hid under the stairs most of the time.

Since she has been living with us, she has been treated like a Princess. She has been hand-fed, walked every day, received the best diet, medications, exercise and veterinary care available and has been loved a lot.

She regained most of her eyesight, her skin cleared up and she was an active healthy and happy, spoiled-rotten dog. We never went anywhere without her and she became a huge part of our lives.

Ruby had a pulmonary stenosis and had recently developed an enlarged heart and a lot of abdominal fluid buildup. After a few weeks of treating her symptoms and trying to keep her comfortable, last Thursday, she got to the point where we had to make the agonizing, but humane decision to end her suffering. Our hearts are broken.

That beautiful little bulldog brought smiles and laughter everywhere she went. People would smile, chuckle, giggle or even laugh out loud just from seeing her. Ruby was walked every day, so over the years, she brought a lot of people happiness.

Ruby brought a lot of love into our lives and she will be missed terribly for a very long time.

IF IT SHOULD BE

If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand.
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years.
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so;
The time has come -- please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend,
And please stay with me till the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Please do not grieve -- it must be you
Who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we three, these years;
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

Thank you - I love you, Ruby

  • <3 the 0 dislikes(:

  • Easy to tell this beautiful girl was cared for. Bulldogs are sometimes troubled and often need some special care. Looks like she got exactly this from you.

    We have been through a similar situation and knows how you must feel. We have found great comfort in our other bulldogs and our late girls surviving daughter.

  • Beautiful video and story. She was very lucky to have you. I also lost my first bulldog (Brutus) at a young age. He was also very sick. These dogs are just the best. So sorry for your loss. I never got over my first one. My bulldog (Annie) now is the love of my life.
