Toccata by Patrick J. Burns (Daehn Publications, 2007, Grade 4). Recorded by the Cleveland Symphonic Winds. Commissioned by the 2007 North Jersey Area Band Association.

Originating in the 16th century as a style of keyboard writing, the toccata is a type of composition which generally features fast passagework, rhythmic drive and motivic development in a relatively short span of time. Although the definition of the term and the general style of the form has changed over the centuries, the toccata's energetic and whimsical characteristics have been retained. This composition is a modern setting of these general ideas in the concert band medium.
