The eton Satellit 750 radio.
This retro looking radio has suffered mixed reviews on sites like eham which can often make one very indecisive about purchasing a particular radio due to the varied review ratings from 1-5 stars. I had confidence in the eton brand because I already own the eton 5 portable of which I can only speak of very highly. It was an easy decision for me to take a chance when purchasing the Sat 750 and my trust in the brand was well rewarded. With an external longwire antenna this radio rocks. I have had excellent reception on many USB utility stations and accross the amateur bands.
The SSB is a doddle to use, just tune the closest that you can on ther main tuning knob and then with very little adjustment, fine tune the station with the ssb bfo fine tuning knob. I am guessing that a lot of the negative reviews and complaints about not being able to zero in on a perfect 'unrobotised' voice are spawned from having whacked the RF gain way to high. All you need to do is set the RF gain so that you can comfortably hear the transmission clearly. you also have the choice with this radio to use the RF gain in auto mode but I prefer the 'human' touch..Thats all part of the fun !. A good point to remember is that the closest you can match the impedence of the long wire to that of your radio (50ohms) the better will be the quality/amount of signal received. To do this it is always a good idea to use at the very least a 50 ohm magnetic balun but better still incorporate a simple 0-30 mhz ATU between the long wire and your radio. With these wonderful contraptions you can select various settings accross the frequencies via a band switch and than seemingly adjust the resonance of the longwire (fool the radio into thinking the impedance is correct for the chosen band) with the two matching variable capacitors.
ATU's are usually available on ebay but there are also many quite simple schematics/building instructions available on the net that would not cost more than a few pounds to make.
Back to the Satellit 750. I feel that this receiver has been much maligned in some cases due to ignorance alone. I find it a real pleasure to use and also, don't forget that this model has the external rotatable mw/lw antenna which does indeed allow for the nulling of close stations when you are doing a spot of early evening or early morning MW/LW DX'ing. There is also a socket on the rotatable antenna for an external MW/LW antenna if you so wish.
The Shortwave stations boom in, particularly when using an external antenna but the built in telescopic whip does a fair job in its own right.

  • He is talking about operating from stateside, as in he will be operating from there. But he is not actually in the States during this conversation. His callsign indicates he is in Italy.

If he had been operating from the USA the regulations would require him to put "W" and a single digit number in front of his regular callsign. In the case of Baltimore Maryland it would be "W3" in front of his call.

  • @FirstToken Thanks for the info.

  • does the Eton Grundig Satellite 750 cover 11 meters 26,00 to 28000 meters as well?

  • The person talking is deluded. All you need is a 'barefoot' 100 watt rig (transciever), and a wire antenna to talk all over the world. You don't 'need' several hundred watts.

  • yay I have a radio named after me :))))))

  • I just purchased a 750 and am totally taken with this tabletop receiver. I also have a Grundig G4000A receiver and this "upgrade" to the 750 is so awesome! I so appreciated your video clip here of the 750 at your listening post. So many thanks for your posting. Bob, VE9EE in Canada.
