Repulse Monkey, fixed feet, right side view - 03/11/10 (Winter)
This feet parallel, fixed-feet variation of the tai chi movement "Repulse Monkey" is one of my favorite deep breathing, chi circulating exercises. I do it in all types of weather, wherever there's lots of clean fresh air.
I especially like doing this exercise near large bodies of water, where endlessly flowing waves are a constant reminder of the natural flow of energy, in, out, and through my body, during each breath cycle.
Harmonize and blend with Nature's rhythms of chi flow.

The action of simultaneously lifting both arms expands my ribcage and helps my diaphragm drop lower into my abdomen, allowing more fresh air to enter my lungs.
Transferring total body weight rhythmically from one leg to the other while keeping both knees well bent is an excellent weight-bearing activity which helps strengthen each leg, and helps build strong bones, preventing osteoporosis.
The slow, symmetrical movements exercise and lubricate all the joints throughout my body with synovial fluid, helping my body remain flexible as I get older.

described tai chi as "swimming in air."
Whenever I do this symmetrical "Repulse Monkey" exercise, I do feel as if I'm swimming in air.
The rhythmic movements of tai chi help keep my body well-toned year round, so when summer comes around again, I am ready and able to swim. My body stays flexible, my lungs hold a lot of air because of the regular deep breathing exercises I do daily, my tendons are elastic and firm because of the total body jing that I practice while doing tai chi.
In short, "swimming in air" conditions and prepares my body for actually swimming in water

I like swimming in air, and in water!

All sorts of "feel good" chemicals are generated by my brain during this slow, rhythmic, deep-breathing tai chi exercise, especially when I silence internal brain chatter for a while and truly pay attention to the subtle, moment to moment sensations of air touching my skin, stimulating every nerve cell, just like water stimulates every skin cell during swimming.
When I'm actually swimming in water, the tactile stimulation produced by water completely surrounding my body creates very pleasant sensations. Like a gentle, total body massage.
One of the main reasons I'm always looking forward to swimming is the natural high I experience when my body is fully immersed in water. My entire being literally swims in the "fountain of youth" secretions generated by my brain. The physiology of my whole body changes when these "feel good" chemicals are released. When my physiology changes, my mood changes, usually for the better. These "feel good" chemicals help slow down the aging process. Sometimes, when I'm swimming, I lose track of time. It's almost as if time stands still for a while.
Dr. Deepak Chopra often observes that when time seems to stand still, the body ceases to age during those moments

Slow, rhythmical "swimming in air" tai chi movements, like this Repulse Monkey exercise, when done with a quiet, meditative mind (no interference from linguistic left brain chatter), a mind fully attentive to the present moment, can also trigger the release of such "feel good" anti-aging chemicals throughout my body.
High on Nature!
A natural high - - from deep breathing, stretching. Swimming in water. Swimming in air.
