TEOTITLAN, Oaxacan Zapotec Ceremonies and rituals

TEOTITLAN DEL VALLE, Oaxaca - México. 26 de Marzo de 2008.

Teotitlan del Valle is the famous village of more or less 9 000 inhabitants about 90% of them are weavers and weave the traditional Zapotec Rugs.

The guys are handling Sacred Herbs to the public servers of the Community from the President to the TOPIL (police, messenger, and authority figure) when its time to dance, people always hold the herb.

Its a time when Zapotecs can make fun of the Authority embedded in the public serice joking and dancing they teach us that this Authority is temporal, it was given by the community and can be withdrawn at any time.

I also find it as a ritual to remember that we are always using a MASK, we need it in order to play all the necessary rolls in society, the mask of the son, of the student, of the priest, the mask of the politician, etc.

But those masks, those roles are not YOU, your persona is not your true self, it is just a mask that you wear a little bit too often!
During this week Zapotecs dance with masks, they joke around and have fun, we remember ourselves that in our lives we are too often just wearing a mask and playing a role and that we must not take it too seriously, the world created by that mask is just an illusion, we should not forget about our journey to find our true self.
