JFK speechwriter Ted Sorensen compares the JFK speech to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association in 1960 to Mitt Romney's speech about his religion last month.
Governor Mitt Romney is a RINO. He supports stringent gun laws. His Massachusetts Health care overhaul pales in comparison to the atrocity of Obamacare, but it was similar. He has never expressed public regret for this. He told Michigan residents at an event there that the financial services bailout was absolutely necessary. He stated you said that the Republican Party needs to pass "immigration reform" (amnesty) in order to attract new voters.
How ironic! JFK said in his talk that he believed in an America where a candidate wouldn't be judged by his religion. Now they are using that very speeh to knock down Mitt because he's a Mormon. Sad!
Soyoyful, you don't seem so joyful to me since you have to resort to name-calling. But the truth is Romney's slick political advance men built the speech up as one that would clear up how his Mormon faith would affect his presidency, and then he decided not to address the question at all. Oh well, I forgive you for being testy; it appears that, after tonight, the prospects for a Romney presidency no longer really matter anyway. Sleep well.
"never really addressing the question of his religion?"
Exactly retard. thats the whole point. didn't you hear him say that would be counter to the separation clause. Kennedy went into it to bleed the Good Book for his politics. Romney exercised sacred restraint pal. Whilst reassuring the public that he separated it from the duties of the presidency. Don't like it? tough! It's the truth! Little foundational bias there hey pal?
sojoyful, you say, "There should have been no question of the sincerity of the man after watching that speech," but the question of Romney's sincerity arises because he never really answered the question he himself proposed as being the topic of his speech; which actually was how his Mormonism would affect his presidency and what we should think about that.
Hive you say that "A number of Catholics feel that Romney's was the speech that JFK should have given." So, you mean a number of us Catholics feel that Kennedy should of mentioned Catholicism only once and then quickly shift the topic so that he would appear to be a Protestant fundamentalist the way the Romney did; never really addressing the question of his religion?
This is very good. It's good to get an historic perspective from a Kennedy insider, especially since superficial comparisons are being made between the two speeches. Thanks so much for this clip.
