George Freeman, the Vice President and Assistant General Counsel of the New York Times, discusses prior restraints, one of the most dramatic restrictions on the First Amendment and freedom of speech. A prior restraint is an attempt by the government to prevent an individual or media entity from publishing a particular piece of information. In order to obtain a prior restraint, the government must meet an extraordinarily high burden of proof.
