  • Some view charity as focusing on giving relief to those in need right now, while philanthropy focuses on changing problems in the long-term. Consider the saying Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime. Think of giving the man a fish as charity; it is important right now and relieves the mans current pressing need. Think of teaching the man to fish as philanthropy; it is solving the problem in the long term.

  • the concept of Philanthropy is good but why not just call it charity. i hate big words that mean simple things. but thanks for letting me know

  • Good update to the 1980s version created by the Minnesota Council on Foundations "Philanthropy Is..." concept.
