2:23PM-
Looking for trains on the South Side, I heard something about a Herzog train on the NS Chicago Line trying to request permission through CP513, Englewood Crossing. I made the drive through the hood and came up to the junction just in time. What came was something I wasn't expecting, a Herzog work train with a control unit, articulated well cars, and a strange piece of power pushing.
HZGX MPM (Multi Purpose Machine) #184 (pushing)

2:36PM-
With the diamonds clear, Inbound Metra 516 hi-tails it though the junction.

2:42PM-
Outbound Metra 603 thunders over the diamonds next.

3:34PM-
At the 107th Street stop along the Ex. IC Metra Electric Line, an inbound highliner set speeds North on the express track meeting Amtrak's Illini 393 on the parellel CN/IC Chicago Subdivision
P42DC #17

4:27PM-
Outbound Metra 601 makes a stop and the conductor and I have a brief chat.

5:04PM-
I now moved further South to Blue Island Junction, where it didn't take long for a Harbor transfer to show up.
IHB SD20 #3862
IHB GP40-2 #4015

5:14PM-
A BNSF manifest was next to come through the junction, Northbound on the IHB.

BNSF C44-9W #702

5:29PM-
A pair of CP AC4400CW's #9574 and #9650 lead a vehicle train up the Harbor enroute to Bensenville.

  • whats the first train in the video

  • @1998ChevroletS10 a Herzog work train.

  • I heard that Englewood was not the safest place to be. Is that true or has it changed. How safe is it?

  • @strobx1 actually Englewood is THE WORST neighborhood in Chicago. It has the highest murder and violent crime rate in the city, not to mention all the crack and heroin problems. Three Chicago police officers were killed so far this year here. The junction though is above the streets and pretty close to I-94 so I've never had problems.

  • Thank goodness that diamond will finally be replaced with a flyover bridge as construction has already begun. As neat as diamonds are, they often create serious congestion problems, and that one is one of the worst in the nation for causing train delays actually.

  • Nice crew on the herzog train!

  • Hey Frank, I have a little bit of information for you on that pushing power on that MOW train. Herzog 184 is a what many people call a "scab" which is basically a SW1000 with a shell on it. The shell offers additional controls that the unit would not normally offer, while the SW1000 offers the pushing or pulling power

  • hey frank what would be your favoritte horns?? mine wold be a old cast chessie K5LA a second generation P3 and the S5t

  • @BoxcarFrank their really weird looking i was just asking cause i have never in 14 years have seen one of them thanks dude

  • I saw the same Herzog consist at CP502 a few times in June/July. I'm guessing they were doing some serious track work cuz traffic on the Chicago Line was a bust on Friday.

  • @BoxcarFrank Thanks
