THE STORY OF A MOTHER
When the album titled "sweet mother" was released in Nigeria some years ago, it was an instant hit worldwide, people enjoy listening and dancing to that melodious lyrics serenading the priceless gift of a mother's love in our lives. That beat has a way of making you want to get up and dance, so, 'am sure the DJ will not forget to have that in his or her collections whenever we roll out the drums for our mothers to mark the yearly mothers day celebration. Mothers are far more closer to children than their fathers by nature resulting from the mother/child biological tie during and after birth, vis-a-vis pregnancy and subsequent breast-feeding.

To a great extent, mothers are more inclined to influencing their children's behavioral pattern because of the quality time they spend together from pregnancy through cradle and often well into early adulthood, hence the saying, "you are never old enough to your mother." In most cases, mothers remain the most trusted confidant in every one's life because of the trust earned resulting in inseparable bond. How well a child is raised determines to a great extent how he fared in life and that is also the most lasting legacy you can bequeath on any child, a good upbringing, everything else may leave but that stays. When the idea of hosting the Edo women in our community, particularly members of the Edo sisters club to a mother's day bash was brought before the house for consideration, BANC members voted overwhelmingly in support, the few dissenting voices only worried about the time frame but it was decided that the women in our lives deserve a day to be celebrated and appreciated. Led by the president, executives and members of the Benin Association of Northern California, the drums are out and ready for the first time in this particular event.

The journey through motherhood is a mixed bag of fun and bumps, therefore, our mothers, sisters, wives and daughters deserved a special mother's day celebration that is fit only for the ekun n'obiokhaes! The role of a mother in the life of a child right from pregnancy through adult hood cannot be overemphasized, their influence is most pronounced in our behavioral patterns later in our lives because they were there during the formative years when we start learning the basic art of living, at this tender age, the memory is more receptive and almost photographic and the mind open to absorb. A mother's influence at this age stays with us forever, the supremacy of the mother's place in a family setting is almost divine and is the bedrock of the core family values hence the sayings: "AMALELE OKHUO, AGHI TINYAN RE" and "BEHIND EVERY SUCCESSFUL MAN, THERE IS A WOMAN". It is good to mark mother's day once a year but mothers should be celebrated and appreciated everyday because mother's don't have days off, it's a lifetime commitment. Most mothers here have no help as it is back home, they are therefore saddled with countless chores, and they are expected to perform these multi faceted tasks cheerfully without complaining, else they're branded a nag! As we prepare to put on our dancing shoes for the beautiful evening of fine wine, food and music, let us pause for a moment and reflect on these humble attributes of the Edo mothers in our immediate community and give them a standing ovation for being always there for their respective families come rain, come shine.
Well done and more grease to your elbows..
