This is a peace offering to all thoes Richie Cole fans out there. I thought after reading some of the comments on the other pages (ie Cole is keeping bebop alive) there would be loads of Sax players playing his music but no. No Cole compositions in the Aebersold collection and only his version of I love Lucy in the shear Real book used in the Uk. The only American on YOU TUBE appears to be a dog called Sully.
I've arranged this from the Eddie Jefferson/Cole recording on Keeper of the Flame. I've added Chord substitution and am soloing over the chords to the song. On every other version the solos are over a simple repeated pattern. This tune is not really Bebop it was written as a Samba but I've changed the beat to swing. (Well New York was/is the capitol of Jazz Swing/bop) P.S Ive never been to N.Y.

  • If I didn't say it before, nice job Conn6M! Good alto sound and nice improv.

  • @saxophonedave Thanks Dave. This is really for Richie Cole fans(even though a lot of them seem ungratefull) I usually play this tune much faster (around 300bpm) with expanded bars and lots of sub chords to speed up harmonic motion. I've spent the last year studying traditional European music but I have a little time now so I might put the fast version on in the future (when Ive practised a bit)

  • @grantula2346 Oversimplification on for what has been a big problem for me. If I was biting down that much the tone would become thinner, it does not. If it sounds stuffy to you it is more than likely poor recording (clipping on the high notes). See my reply to saxman 1141 on Richie Cole comes to tea for a fuller explanation.

  • man conn6m is one militant user xD

  • @conn6m Difference being that your tone is due to poor technique. You're closing your throat and pinching the reed with your embouchure. That's why your upper register is so stuffy and sharp.

  • Tuning...

  • Didnt meyer make a Richie Cole mouthpeice sometime recent? I think i remember seeing it somewhere..

  • amazing

  • I'm not professional but that looks like a arc soprano sax.
