NES Maniac Mansion - exploding hamster & Ed kills Syd

The ability to microwave the hamster is a trick that slipped by the old NES Game Standards Policy. Until the game ratings system came along, Nintendo of America censored all offensive text and content otherwise 'inappropriate' for children. NOA somehow missed this one though—possibly because the ability to microwave the hamster is limited to Syd and Razor. The other kids will say "How sick!" if you direct them to use the hamster in the microwave. In the European (PAL) version of the game, the game has been censored so that Syd and Razor say "No way, man, these things are just loaded with cholesterol!" if you direct them to use the hamster in the microwave.

@UniversalKiwi However, Syd is not a punk musician, but is, rather, a new wave musician (even if New Wave has stylistic roots in punk). Typically, new wave musicians are more intellectual and artistic than the typical punk musician.

I think Syd's theme is kind of catchy, but also I think this game stereotypes punk musicians as people with a sick sense of humour. If you pause when Syd gets the hamster, the item box will say "Exploded Hams". Bacon anyone?

the funniest part is when ed says: Oh no!!! what did you do!!! argh!!! and the it just cuts to a grave stone :D

I just read it and I have to say it's very funny. Nintendo just needs to lay of with the censoring. Most of it was nessecary but others were not like the KILL THRILL game or this. I mean what kid is really going to put a hamster in the microwave?

Nintendo didn't know about it, and was furious when they found it. They demanded it be sensored in the PAL version, and it was. That's why LucasArts games have trouble with Nintendo. Look up 'The Expurgation of Maniac Mansion for the Nintendo Entertainment System', it's an article written by a designer of the game, and is a pretty funny read about how Nintendo, even back then, controlled content via the 'Seal of Nintendo'... lol
