@asconan In fact, nunchaku is most likely an Okinawan adaptation of flail weapons used in East and Southeast Asia, particularly southern China that maintained close bonds with the Ryukyuan archipelago. It may well be a diminutive form of the sanjiegun, the "original" Chinese three-section staff. I advise you to take a look at the san bon nunchaku that possibly predates the current form. Ciao!

@asconan I was talking about sansetsukon, which is not a part of the traditional Okinawan arsenal. As for the history of nunchaku, it was a minor weapon in traditional Okinawan weapon arts and not much known is about it. Almost all Okinawan weapons "resemble" farming (or in case of eku, fishing) implements but this is mostly an abuse of history to romantically link Okinawan martial arts with oppressed and rebellious peasants.

@EunusRex correct me if I am wrong, but I had the impression that the "nunchaku" was used in Okinawa since 1600? And like all Okinawan weapons, it was a farming tool. It was 2 wooden sticks connected with a small piece of rope that were used to put in a donkey's mouth and turn its head to the left/right... It could be a very wrong/funny interpretation, however, if you know more, please enlighten me :)
Thanks

Sansetsukon is a Chinese weapon that was brought from Fujian Province in 1935 by Matayoshi Shinko Sensei who adaptated it to kobudo and popularised in Okinawa, then in Japan.
In Okinawa, ヌンチャク is read as "nunchaku" or "nunchiyaku". 双節棍 is read "sōsetsukon" like in Japan proper.
