The full debate from "Friday Night, Saturday Morning", 9th November 1979.

On the edition of 9 November 1979, hosted by Tim Rice, a discussion was held about the then-new film Monty Python's Life of Brian, which been banned by many local councils and caused protests throughout the world with accusations that it was blasphemous. To argue in favour of this accusation were broadcaster and noted Christian Malcolm Muggeridge and Mervyn Stockwood (the then Bishop of Southwark). In its defence were two members of the Monty Python team, John Cleese and Michael Palin.

The first part is an interview with Cleese and Palin, the actual debate starts 3 minutes into part 2.

  • I think you should add to the description that Muggeridge and Stockwood arrived 15 minutes late when going to watch the movie together to prepare for the debate, meaning that they missed the scene where Brian is shown to not be Jesus.

  • @frithar That's the trouble with bigots, they don't come to debate or listen... just to try to hammer you into submission with their words. Both those gents made the mistake of patronising Cleese and Palin as undergrad students... they totally underestimated their obvious intellect.

  • I've been looking for the full episode for so long! THANK YOU!!!!

  • I remember Cleese saying he could have destroyed Muggeridge at any moment with his own quotes, yet backed off because he felt their arguements had nailed them pretty early.

  • Malcolm Muggeridge and Mervyn Stockwood? Those aren't Python sketch names? C'mon... I half expected to see Graham Chapman and Terry Jones playing the other two.
