Sir Ian McKellen, better known as Gandalf from The Hobbit is currently filming in New Zealand whereas here in dear old blighty, we've just rediscovered his very first television appearance. The master tapes of The Indian Stories of Rudyard Kipling were broadcast just once in 1964 and then swiftly wiped by the BBC, possibly around 1965-1966, if not earlier. It was thought that this programme was lost forever. Fortunately, a film recording of the master tape was discovered in the private collection of an Illinois historical society and was recovered by a financial consortium consisting of Steve Birt, Kaleidoscope and the Tim Disney Archive. Needless to say, the programme will be loaned to the BBC for digital preservation in their archives, after which the master print will continue to reside safely at the TDA's archive facility in Nottingham. Another programme that was missing, believed wiped forever, is safely returned to these shores. Enjoy the clip!
