Caleb came over the day after Thanksgiving and we spent some time playing the Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game (also known as the LOTR SBG) produced by Games-Workshop. I (Paul) played as the Good Side while Caleb championed the Evil Side.
We used an old Mines of Moria scenario from the first edition rulebook, but substituted the most recent rules and profiles from the One Ring (also known as the OR). The Good Side participants were the entire Fellowship. The Evil Side's army was 36 Goblins (a third with shields, a third with bows, and a third with spears), 3 Goblin Captains, and a Cave Troll.
The Good Side's objective was to move at least 5 of the Fellowship (including Frodo) off the opposite table edge. The Evil side had to kill 5 or more of the Fellowship, or kill Frodo.
Boromir was first killed by the Cave Troll, Pippin and Merry both succumbed to volley-fire, the Troll struck again slaying Gimli, the Goblins surrounded Legolas and finished off the Elven prince, and Sam died defending his master.
Even after the Good Side had lost the scenario we played to the bitter end. The Moria detachment was finally eliminated due mainly to courage tests, which only began within a few turns of the Good Side's loss.
In the end the Fellowship escaped Balin's Tomb with the Ring, yet they only remained a shell of their former selves. With Gandalf, Aragorn, and Frodo... there's only so much that a wizard, a man, and a hobbit can do against a Balrog.
We recorded this towards the end of the game.
This is part 2 of 3.
