  • .....so I just about died at 0:33 .......O_O

This movie looks pretty good. I like the opening shot.

  • Oh, that's when I get rather weak in the knees too. It's a good film alright. Really quite a different type of gangster movie from the Cagney/Robinson/Raft sort but then Gary Cooper is a very different sort of star and Mamoulian a unique sort of director.

  • I should add a P.S.... Someone out there, if you're listening and have any influence in these matters... make this film available on DVD!

  • 1931 wow! Great footage. Glad to see you posting again...5*s

  • Thanks VC! I only got/saw this film recently. I'm a big fan of early 30s gangster movies but this really took me by surprise. It's so different. I think Mamoulian as director and Gary Cooper as main star are what mark it out. This is an early scene, you know, just establishing characters, but I do love it. Cooper's so damn good, so natural and at ease... with a light comedic touch and him and Sylvia Sidney are great together. Also, I'm a sucker for this sort of walking through a carnival scene!

  • "Whatever happened to Gary Cooper...the strong, silent type? That was an American." - Tony Soprano. This was my first Gary Cooper movie and I really enjoyed it. Both he and Sylvia Sidney play really good characters and make a very cute couple.

  • Oh he's so cute. There was no one like him.

  • 1:28 Haha! Oh, Gary was the best. He had such a light touch. I wasn't alive until over 30 years after he died, but I still miss him lots.

  • We just watched this film last night. AMAZING.

  • @Tikilizzy

It's well directed and photographed -- but I suspect that this film is so good because it was an original screenplay by Dashiell Hammett, author of "The Maltese Falcon".

  • I wonder how this movie would have turned out if Clara Bow would have played the Sylvia Sidney role like she was scheduled to do?

  • i just bought this DVD on ebay...can't wait to watch it!
