I think the most I've ever had in a game was 8 players, and that was in a Firefly game where everyone was pretty much contained on the ship. I also was using a fairly rules-lite stripped down system too, which I think helped. There was less to keep track of.

@Samwise7RPG I didn't play this session, but it was going on while I was in the room. I played in an 11 person game with Steve at LGGC 2008. He is extremely good at keeping things moving and keeping track of what everyone is doing.
