1972-5. Based on texts by Paracelsus (on alchemical transformation), Heraclitus (on cosmic transformation) and from the Corpus Hermeticum (Hellenistic forgeries of writings by the mythical ancient Egyptian sage, Hermes Trismegistus).

Recorded Kingsway Hall, London, January 1978, with Elgar Howarth conducting the London Sinfonietta.

  • The most difficult *looking* timpani writing i ever looked at was from this piece.

    It formed the background to a promotion poster for Ferneyhough. Peters edition kindly gave it to me when their shop closed down.

  • @trees1 I remember my jaw dropping to the earth's core upon seeing the score of Barrett's "Negatives" - then I read a lengthy, thoughtful review in Fanfare where the reviewer presumed that it was free jazz!

    I wonder how Dlugoszewski notated her scores also, I would love to see one.

  • Amazing! I remember how complex this score is. Sometimes I feel this highly sophisticated western composition sounds as if aboriginal improvisations.
