It is my contention that Win 7 is much lighter than Vista but it is still heavier than XP and although there are some benefits of having a more modern OS like Win 7, if it is too slow, it just isn't worth it. I have noticed as wel that some of the netbooks have CPU's even weaker than the Intel Atom N270 and N280. So if that is the case, that you have one with Win 7 and a smaller processor like the Z520, then you're really up a creak without a paddle.

If you are sure that there are XP drivers available for all your hardware, it would probably be worth making the change.
The other solution is to do what I do, but it is costly. I use an Intel X25 SSD. It is such a fast drive that it more than makes up for the slowdowns caused by the heavier OS.

Unless the train is broadcasting the internet by wifi, the only way you could be hooked up to the internet would be by having a Sat plan. I'm not sure what the plan is called, but Verizon has the service in North America and you pay X amount of dollars/month and are hooked up pretty much everywhere.

Any ethernet or wifi signal can be used. We broadcast wifi across our property for the sake of mobility and less wires.
You only need to have internet at your house/home and either an ethernet cable or wifi router. It is easy to install Live Messenger and/or any other program you like. Live Messenger can be downloaded from MSN and the whole thing only takes approx. 5 minutes.
