During the Flying Eye Hospital program in Niamey, Niger, ORBIS International teamed with Pencils For Kids project a Canadian-based NGO aimed at addressing the educational needs of developing communities (www.pencilsforkids.com) - to provide a community outreach screening for members of this 16 village, 24,000-person community.

The day prior, ORBIS ophthalmologist Grace and Noor met with 16 representatives one from each village along with members of the PNLCC (Nigers ophthalmic society group) and the National Hospital in Niamey to establish a system of Key Health Informants an infrastructure of human resources - within this community. These 16 members, by order of the mayor and head chief, were to become responsible for being the key contact representing their village people and working with the PNLCC and National Hospital of Niamey for further distribution of public health messages and future outreach programs. They were trained on how to conduct a visual acuity test (and were given one for their village), how to identify common eye disease such as cataracts, and more importantly, how to record the data of the patient and report that data back through the PNLCC and the National Hospital of Niamey.

Working with ORBIS Internationals Flying Eye Hospital team, and Robin and Dr. Ed Mednick from Pencils For Kids, these 16 key informants helped deliver the first rural screening in Libore, Niger their township, their citizens.
