1/2 block from the Nina Simone Birthplace in Tryon, NC, the Tryon Doll Makers fights poverty with spools of thread, scraps of fabric, courage, and the will to create a better future. A portion of all proceeds from the sale of Registered Tryon Dolls is reinvested in Tryon's historic African-American community through programs that strike blows against poverty and address issues of early childhood development.
A truly moving way to honor the memory of the great Nina Simone for both her enormous musical talent and her commitment to the cause of racial equality and social justice for all. I can only hope that someday the message of hope expressed in this wonderful song will become a living reality for the children of Tryon NC and all the other forgotten corners of the "Other America." President Obama - are you listening?
