When Chris Rocks daughter, Lola, came up to him crying and asked, Daddy, how come I don't have good hair? the bewildered comic committed himself to search the ends of the earth and the depths of black culture to find out who had put that question into his little girl's head! Director Jeff Stilsons camera followed the funnyman, and the result is Good Hair, a wonderfully insightful and entertaining, yet remarkably serious, documentary about African American hair culture. An exposé of comic proportions that only Chris Rock could pull off, Good Hair visits hair salons and styling battles, scientific laboratories, and Indian temples to explore the way black hairstyles impact the activities, pocketbooks, sexual relationships, and self-esteem of black people. Celebrities such as Ice-T, Kerry Washington, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven Symoné, Maya Angelou, and Reverend Al Sharpton all candidly offer their stories and observations to Rock while he struggles with the task of figuring out how to respond to his daughters question. What he discovers is that black hair is a big business that doesnt always benefit the black community and little Lolas question might well be bigger than his ability to convince her that the stuff on top of her head is nowhere near as important as what is inside.

And this is exactly why I am cutting off all my relaxed hair and going completely NATURAL from now on. Relaxers are TORTURE!!! They are sooo BADDD for your hair, just seeing what those chemicals did to that can, is just one more reason for me to run away from relaxers and get my big chop done QUICK! No more of this false reality that black people's hair is only "good" when it is straight or fake. We need to embrace our natural beauty and stop being brainwashed!

Saw this over the weekend - what an eye opener. Must say, even in the UK, most black women wear weaves etc. I often wondered why their hair had changed over the last decade or so - texture looking more like Indian hair or European hair. Where have these insecurities come from, that almost a whole group of women would want to wear someone else's human hair on their head? Natural black hair is beautiful and so versatile. The weaves and wigs look unrealistic, the thickness n length etc. Sad.

...healthier than relaxed, but if the person who is relaxed takes better care of their hair than the person who is natural, than the relaxed head will most likelyl have healthier, "better" hair. good hair is healthy hair that suits you. no need to get so...!!!??? when faced with a person with a different, unfamiliar view. ^^'

I didn't mean any offense, it's just what your saying is wrong. first off virgin hair, natural hair, is hair that has not been chemically treated. this doesn't include heat unless your talking about natural texture. for example, someone who flat irons their hair is still natural because it can revert back, their just not wearing their natural texture. and natural hair is not automatically healthier than relaxed hair, the hands that treat it is also a factor. I mean, natural hair is naturally...

i think your the one who is slightly narrow minded!!! first of all what i meant was...! virgin hair is un touched by any chemical product or even straightened or curled with heat. it is healty hair which should be good hair

were as relaxed hair is in a worser more damaged state than virgin. hair so technically speaking out of natural hair and relaxed hair relaxed hair is bad hair.do you get it now???

just because your hair has a certain texture doesn't make it better than someone with a different texture. i'd only call your hair good if it's healthy and looks good on you.

but exactly, the culture of using fake hair and relaxing because of insecurity ISN'T as strong as it's portrayed in the movie. relaxer sales have died 40% in 5 years. he didn't even touch the natural and healthy hair boom.

I know, I hated this movie. the message I got was that natural hair is ugly, weaves are always used to hide, and relaxed hair can't grow or be healthy. black women can't win and hate themselves. the end.

oh, well actually black hair isn't just one texture. in northern parts of Africa women can have wavy or straight hair. in the atlantic slave trade Africans were taken from western Africa, where people with more dark skin and kinky hair lived. now after years of mixing in America, the common hair texture ranges from super curly to afro, and everything in between. ^^

yes that is the real problem, but it's true what dayze305 said, that people insult relaxed heads in this natural hair is beautiful movement. just read the comments here, 70% of them are doing it. plus, I believe chris rock's hair views are more of what he observed in his time growing up and not so much of today. the majority of black women don't think kinky hair is bad anymore. look at how many thumbs up you got.

actually Africans come in a range of skin colors and hair textures. the more northern parts of Africa have women with wavy to straight hair. it's just that the Atlantic slave trade brought Africans from western Africa, tribes with dark skin and kinky hair. so really technically speaking, African hair doesn't equal kinky hair. ^^
