@dougaholic Yeah I think it's called a breech block. Might be wrong but that would make sense cuz it blocks... the breech lol.
When this shotgun was invented there weren't all that many pump guns around, mostly lever guns with exposed hammers (and the "rod" coming back), so it makes sense that this would have an open hammer. It wasn't until later (Winchester Model 12) that the sleek enclosed hammer was thought up. Pretty interesting stuff =).

Model 12 is the same. One thing I noticed about the 12 is that you have to pull the trigger to pump it again, You can't pump it several times. AS, most shotguns. Great gun!
