This is the 2002 BBC production of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Hound of the Basekrvilles," starring Richard Roxburgh as 'Sherlock Holmes,' Ian Hart as 'Dr. Watson,' and Richard E. Grant as 'Jack Stapleton.'

Other interesting screen credits of these excellent actors:

Richard Roxburgh also played 'The Duke' in "Moulin Rouge!" (2001); 'Count Vladislaus Dracula' in "Van Helsing" (2004); 'Hugh Stamp' in "Mission: Impossible II" (2000); 'M' and 'The Fantom' and 'Professor James Moriarty' in "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" (2003); and 'Percy Grainger' in "Passion" (1999).

Ian Hart also played 'Dr. Watson' in "The Case of the Silk Stocking" (2004); 'Sir Arthur Conan Doyle' in "Finding Neverland" (2004); and 'Professor Quirinus Quirrell' and 'Voldemort' in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." (2001)

Richard E. Grant also played 'Mycroft Holmes' in "Sherlock" (2002); and 'Barkis Bittern' in "Corpse Bride" (2005).

My thoughts: It may stray from the book a little, but I have yet to see an adaptation of this story as excellent as this.

As to the technical side of things, I had to put this movie together one frame at a time (literally). I also had trouble converting files, so in some of the later parts, you will see the watermark disappear; unfortunately, the quality also decreases in those few parts without the watermark. And in two of the parts, you'll see the picture 'jump' as the watermark disappears/reappears. It's a long and involved story that I'm sure you don't want to hear.

So anyway, enjoy!

I own nothing!

  • this Holmes doesn't really have the kind of brooding mystery I always associated with the character. Still, this is the only Holmes story I've ever read, so I can't really judge. Watson pretty good though- he looks very in love :)

  • as for me our Vasily Livanov :)

  • Is this movie anywhat similar to the book?

  • @ofxxxthexxxflowers I think BBC's Hound is wrong.

  • @SherlockDeWinter Well yeah that is very true. Although Holmes was indeed a very gifted and amazing boxer he did prefer to use his intelligence to get information out of people. That is one thing about Holmes that is amazing (besides his, you know intelligence and crime-solving) is the fact that he could've easily punched the guy up (in the books) but chooses to use his brains instead of brawn.

  • is it just me or the music around 5:55 sounds a little like Harry Potter?

  • @csgrambauer yes, it is strange. But in the book that part "You were driving Mr Sherlock Holmes" happens. Only without the fighting. Holmes did not have to use his fist to get information.

  • I don't care Roxburgh's vision of Holmes, but Ian Hart plays Watson really well.

  • @MDkid1 Yup!

  • this is a great movie, I remember it from a while back.

  • "in 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.' (2001)".

GASP! Don't you mean 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' to keep in sync with the British theme of this movie (and the true title to JK Rowling's book). Lol. ;)

  • @cityofwhat I agree. I remember reading the novel of the Hound of the Baskervilles and I don't remember a scene where he beat up a taxi driver. I know Holmes was a very good boxer but he never punched someone like a taxi driver to get information out of.
