This is a recording of the first time my Chilean Rose tarantula shed his skin since Ive had him.

To shed they lie on their backs, and when I first saw him like this I thought he had snuffed it and tried to turn him over which I later found out was one of the worst things I could have done. After this failure I tried to find a video on youtube to give me some clue about what else to expect, but I got nothing. So, I thought I would upload this to help out anyone else who is in the same position or for anyone whod quite like to see.

Most of the recording is sped up four times to fit it all in in total the process took a couple of hours but I only got the best bits on film.

  • why does that actually happen? :P

  • @themetalkid1996

Because they have exoskeletons that stay roughly the same size even though they grow as they get older. Every once in a while they get to big for their exoskeleton and have to shed it.

  • Does this physically tire the spider out? It looked a bit knackered half way through

  • @richieh1980

Apologies for the late reply. Yer, it really tires them out. As I understand it, they push the skin off by engorging the right parts of their legs at the right time to make an effect like a grub moving, except much slower and with legs that aren't designed to work that way. I always think he looks so relieved when he finally gets it off.

  • i was told at my pet store that if i put a dish of water in with the spider that it will dround its self in it. she told me to squirt the side of the glass and thats how it will drink. do u no if thats true. i just seen that u had a dish of water so i was just woundering

Apologies for the late reply. Do you have a Chilean Rose like mine? I've had mine for five years and it hasn't drowned yet, and that is with a really big water bole. However, other tarantulas might be different. I suppose you could always put in a jam jar lid and fill that with water, I can't see any way it could drown in a jam jar lid, but if it has grown up drinking from the side of the glass it might not get drinking from a dish. I'd experiment with the jam jar lid and see.

  • I just got a female Chilean Rose. Her name is Lelu. I can't wait until she molts. I hope I get to see it. Mine would flip out if I put a light on her like that; she hates light. I read that most of them do. I can see why the little holes on the old skin would freak people out. But thank you for posting this; it helped me so I know what to expect when Lelu molts.

  • @calland2007 call me a weirdo if you will but I love my Rose haired, Lelu. Sorry if you can't see the beauty in different creatures. Saying that you would kill someone's pet is horrible. That's like someone saying that they would kill your dog/cat or whatever you may have just because they don't like that animal. Live a little. You may be surprised to find out you really do like something you never thought you would. That's how I got Lelu.

  • those fangs are beastly
