No, this was on an island, known as 'Vestmanneyjar' or 'Heimaey' . The one who's exploding now is in Eyjafjallajökull, or underneath the glacier. But it's not so far away though.

WE studied this in Geology at university and how they were able to direct the lava in the bay using cold water.

@PainterofYou not on;y did they stay, the lava flow threatened to close off the harbour, they villgers and fishermen pumped sea water onto the lava flow to try and redirect it. they succeeded in svaing the inlet.
