My most recent colony of ants here is a black species of Formica which I caught up in the mountains here. Having good timing and knowing where to look, anyone can capture a queen ant with very little to no work. Note in this video that the queen is the larger ant with the bigger thorax (middle part) where she once had wings.

This video was filmed using a Canon EOS Rebel T3 using extension tubes and no macro lens.

  • When is the best time to find a bunch of varieties of queen to choose from? If your queen dies, can another queen of the same species replace her or will the workers kill any new queens?

  • i want some ants!

  • How often is a queen born?

  • What kind of camera do you use to get so close?

  • I am so jealous
