Step two of knitting an afterthought heel, the waste yarn is removed, the live stitches picked up, extra stitches are picked up and crossed to close up the corners, then the heel cup is knit. Shaping the heel cup is done by alternating rounds of plain knitting with decrease rounds where 1 stitch is decreased at each edge of the sole and each edge of the instep until the stitch count is the same as toe cast on (or to fit the heel of the wearer). Step 3 will show how the live stitches are stitch grafted and the yarn ends woven in to finish the heel neatly.
