Nine queens enter the ring, only one will be victorious....
I've heard some coloraturas say that this passage from the queen's first aria is the hardest coloratura they've ever had to sing. Presented in chronological order:
1. Erna Berger, 1937
2. Joan Sutherland, 1962 (live)
3. Roberta Peters, 1964
4. Beverley Sills, 1966 (live)
5. Edita Gruberova, 1988
6. Cheryl Studer, 1990
7. June Anderson, 1991
8. Sumi Jo, 1993
9. Natalie Dessay, 2001

  • Sutherland, Jo, Dessay, Anderson. Pero faltan varias grandes Reinas de la Noche. Serra, Deutekom y Damrau.

  • Sumi Jo. But Sutherland if the tempo had been correct. What on earth were the director/conductors thinking of, making her sign that fast?

  • 0:42. ouch

  • where is Diana Damrau?

  • It's Dessai and Sami Jo. However, it's the 2nd aria that the toughest to sing in my opinion.

  • sumi jo and joan sutherland

    roberta peters is too slow

  • For me: Sills, Studer, Dessay, Sutherland, Anderson

  • Joan Sutherland of course.

  • So if you're looking for the best interpretation of the Queen of the Night, try Edita Gruberova. Or Diana Damrau - her stage is also awesome.

  • It's funny that anyone who wants to brag about opera brings Sutherland forward - the more advanced call her "La stupenda" of course, as if knowing her nickname will credit their taste of opera. Mrs. Sills is another option for the critic wannabe. If nothing works, slam Sumi Jo in!

Sutherland does generally reign supreme -not in this one though - too fast-paced, she even swallows at times. Sills does Königin like a vaudeville dancer. My piano has more innate feeling than Sumi Jo.
