BBC Radio 4's Crossing Continents travelled to Malaysia to explore the divide among races. This extract features reporter Mukul Devichand speaking to Luqman, a student leader at the Universiti Teknologi Mara - a Malay University. Last year he led a street protest after a state official remarked that perhaps one in 10 university places should be opened to minorities. The full documentary was first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Thursday, 8 January, 2008. Find out more: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/7816455.stm

there's no reason to speak any other language than malaysian

    satu bangsa - satu bahasa

everyone can learn malaysian, but you can't expect anyone to learn a tonal language

  • he he he he he "we have given up the citizenship to non-malays" no wonder VC got kicked out where it produced students like this.!!!

  • Luqman, i pity on your knowledge as a university student. You admit publicly that Malays are the weaker race in Malaysia and should be treated as one and given special care and treatment in all matters include Lands. Why just can't you say the air we breath as well? Should Malay be breathing more air than non Malays? I merely passed my Form 5 to speak to such an educated man like u... I feel so Shame for u Luqman. I can't imagine if u r the PM, hope not and will never someone like u.

  • M for malas=malays

  • you're talking about UITM right?so basically you're telling me that a non-muslim Sabahan Bumiputera doesn't qualify for your university?with your comments, you really brought a bad name to us university students..so many factual errors.example?all Bumiputeras=Malay.

  • @demonsoldierchem i wanted to learn malay a long time ago, because kuala lumpur is my favourite city, but i got discouraged, because everyone says how unimportant and redundant bahasa malaysia in malaysia is, so I decided to learn indonesian instead..

i even applied to many companies in KL and many of them require mandarin or tamil knowledge and during job interviews i was told by malaysian companies that learning malay is a waste of time and i should learn indonesian instead and go to JKT
