For Benedict, the sexual abuse revelations in Germany, where lawyers say that more than 300 cases of alleged abuse have emerged -- mostly since January -- are the most ominous. The archdiocese of Munich recently revealed that it had allowed a priest suspected of abuse to continue pastoring there in the early 1980s, when the pope -- then known as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger -- was archbishop. That priest was later convicted of abuse.
The Munich archdiocese's number two official from the time has claimed full responsibility for the episode and no other cases that could implicate the pope have emerged. "If it's one case, it's embarrassing but survivable," says Allen. "If it becomes five or ten, a pattern emerges and it becomes something more serious."

The Murphy Commission described child sex abuse as an endemic in Catholic boys institutions in Ireland.

Class actions have so far netted almost $1.6 billion for over 10,000 victims in the U.S where the John Jay study conservatively estimated over 4,000 guilty priests. Similar patterns have been observed in Germany, Malta, Australia and Canada.

@infospear loose their tax exemp status? Well, ok. But for a priest guilty of sexually abusing a child, I was thinking more about cutting their nuts off. Swift, with a cleaver, on a chopping block... while they're consious. Have a medical staff ready to clean up the poor bastards afterwords...

If I was in charge, any priest convicted of sexual abuse of a child would have his nuts taken off. The removal would be swift, with a cleaver, on a chopping block. Medical staff standing by so the poor bastard doesn't bleed to death..and that's it..
