The old lawn was also inherited when the owner bought the house, and it was a 3" inch thick carpet of St. Augustine. The problem with St. Augustine is that its a water hog, it needs just huge amounts of water in order to stay green during the spring and especially during the summer months. Also St. Augustine has a dormant cycle which means during the winter months it appears to be dead because it goes dormant. St. Augustine needs to be maintained by de-thatching it, or it will become this 3" inch thick carpet and just over run everything. This lawn is a perfect example, because we found 12" inch walking stones under the 3" inch thick carpet of St. Augustine, and the home owner had no idea that they were ever there at all. They were just hidden under this Carpet of grass that had obviously never been de-thatched.
