Since its opening in 2006, Viera High School has become a school of distinction. Located on the East Coast of Florida in Brevard County, Viera is a new school that opened with a bold vision- and it now embodies that vision. It is a school where teachers love to teach and students love to learn. A school that offers not only 17 Advanced Placement classes but programs that prepare students for college or a career. A school that ranks among the top 20 high schools in Florida. Most high schools have one or two eminent attributes that define the school- maybe they offer the most AP courses or boast a wide-range of extracurriculars. It is uncommon to find a school that excels in so many different areas that it becomes seemingly transcendent. Viera High School is that school- the place where students inspire teachers just as much as teachers inspire students- where anything is possible. In the classroom, Viera is exceptional, offering 17 AP courses and adding new ones each year. Over 900 AP exams were taken last year, and our pass rate is well over the state, country, and world rates. The school also has career preparatory programs, including the Academy of Business and Finance and the Academy of Digital Arts and Media, both of which provide students with hands-on experience for the real world. Our library received the Power Library Award, one of only four recipients in the state, commending its integration of teacher collaboration and student success. Its also rare to find a school where so many students actually appreciate and understand how incredible their teachers are, and this student-teacher bond is difficult to describe. But how many senior classes choose their beloved AP Government teachers unforgettable phrase, Go forth and do great things, as their class motto? Outside of the classroom, Viera is equally outstanding, with exceptional music and athletic programs, and enough diverse extracurriculars to engage all students. In only four years, Vieras athletes have already won four Cape Coast Conference Titles and seven District and Regional Championships. The school also offers the largest comprehensive music program in the county, with nine ensemble classes and an AP Music Theory course, after having started with only a few band classes and 110 students. Vieras principal, Mr. Mark Tormoen, was even named the 2010 Florida Music Educators Association Administrator of the Year for his promotion of music education. Hoping to encourage outside-of-school involvement, Viera also has a number of clubs and organizations. There are the standard honor societies like NHS and the student-run senate, but countless students are involved with the more unconventional organizations. These include a community service-based recycling team, equality-promoting Gay-Straight Alliance, Hogwarts-loving Harry Potter Alliance, an X-Box-obsessed video game club, and more. All of these clubs were formed to make a difference, like the senates beach cleanup for the International Day of Climate Action, and many were created by students. Viera High School is clearly a model for other schools across the nation, as evidenced by the high academic standards and dedication to student improvement. Please, vote for Viera High School for the Race to the Top Commencement Challenge!
