i kinda confuse. Are those the magnet that is contact with the plate? or is it inside those cylinder where a charge and discharge occurs?

I think i have seen one of those telephone batteries before.
It was a very old, big cylinder that said dry cell telephone battery on it

This is the one most like my 1908 solenoid engine.
Different but simular.
Mine doesn't seem to adjust direction.
I like the simple way mine works better.
