My final attempt at A Passion Play concert film.

(Unless a wealth of footage is someday discovered)

This July will already be 4 years since I uploaded my

1st Passion Play film. This was before Youtube could

handle high quality video and I was using software

that allowed only one track of video editing. Even

with those limitations the response I have had from

that film was shocking to me. I literally have

hundreds of e-mails and they're still coming. (this is

also when youtube allowed you to search and find the

videos you were looking for)

This mystical concert had an even greater impact on

those who saw it than I had thought, and those who

weren't there were able to imagine what it might have

been like.

This update to my Passion Play film is much improved.

Both quality and sound sync. More of my original

intent.

Mainly film from Oakland 1973 and Madison Sqare

Garden. This is the best version of Oakland 73 I have

found. The sound for the entire film is also Oakland.

This film has always had actual sound but has also

always been out of sync so I finnaly fixed the audio

sync on this. I also did some color correction and

reduced the screen size in an attempt to acheive the

best quality I could from it. I just couldn't get that

with fullscreen. It would, at times look crummy.

I want to thank everyone who has helped me along the

way I considered part of the tulltapes team including

Electrocutas Pete, Davy Hall, Tullpress,

bootlegstullianos, Ministry of Information, All my

family and friends from the Tull heyday, PaulHartxyz,

& underwwraps2 (who has his own nice collection of

Passion Play videos) and everyone I forgot.

A very special Thanks to my friend Chris Crump
who was actually part of the travelling Passion Play

circus. Controlling the lasers during Ian's flute

solo, Juggling on stage during Martin's guitar solo,
or playing Sunshine of your Love on the drums as Ian

looked on before Tull's soundcheck. It was one of the

most memorable experiences of his life and I thank him

for sharing some of those great stories with me and

moments with us. His excellent photos shown in this

film were taken from the front row in Los Angeles..

  • Jethro Tull was awesome........Passion Play was a fantastic Concert !!!!!!!!!!

  • You're right, the critics slammed this album in 1973... even though it's clearly a masterpiece.

It was mostly a political thing because Ian was at war with the critics even before "A Passion Play" came out. The critics didn't like Ian because they thought he was being too smart for his own good. They felt threatened by his intellect. Ian often challenged them... as in the song "Only Solitaire," which was written BEFORE "A Passion Play" came out.

The critics didn't like to be "criticized". Ha!

  • Tull went into tax exile in (I think) Switzerland briefly before giving it up and going home. This would have been just before APP during the Chateau D'isaster recordings that later became War Child.

  • Great work! I have been suge a huge Tull fan from the beginning. This music has had a direct link to my brain from repeated listening over the years. Hearing it again & seeing it reminds me of so many superlative moments from my treasured past. I commend you for sharing this.

  • @JesseP11 I don't think they ever went resident in the US, but they did spend a lot of time touring there early 70s and UK fans used to complain about not getting to see them.

  • @jmharrison51 I remember reading that APP went to #1 in the US while only going to #17 in the UK in the charts. I think they briefly lived in the US at one time to spite the UK?

  • Thank you very much - it's also a great job on video editing

  • @PaulHartXYZ

Yeah Ian has some pretty caustic/sarcastic lyrics about the church and organized religion, critics, corporate society etc.

Nicely done as well, I love listening to the lyrics.

The guy was before his time.

  • Paul, as always a perceptive comment. I watched a programme last night on UK TV about the history of British prog rock. JT got a mention, mostly about Thick as a Brick - but the programme missed one vital point. JT was never about instrumental showing off; it was and is about a superbly gifted song writer with a wonderful talent for melody whose creative output over 40+ years contains more truly great songs than anyone else who springs to mind right now. He's not bad on flute or guitar either.

  • Not really trying too hard. One thing that I've noticed looking at som amny Tull concert films on YouTube and going to gigs since 1974, is that Tull always put on that much more of a show in the U.S. than in the UK - so maybe they were trying harder, for those extra bucks :-)
