With a cameo appearance in Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris and Richard Linklater's Before Sunset, Shakespeare and Company is arguably the most iconic bookshop in the French capital. The building, a 17th century ex-monastery has become a landmark in the 5th arrondissement. Apart from being a bookstore, it also serves as a haven where aspiring writers can stay for free - Allen Ginsberg and Anaïs Nin have both been guests in the past. Originally established in 1919 by an American called Sylvia Beach, fellow expatriate George Whitman took over Shakespeare and Company after Beach's death in 1951. Crane.tv meets with Whitman's daughter, Sylvia to hear about the future of this historical, literary gem. Address: 37 rue de la Bûcherie, 75005, Paris. www.shakespeareandcompany.com

I really like the idea of having an exhibition space and a café, I think it would help the store become even more successful and is a natural extension of a bookstore where people love to come to feel at home.

I've got a very cute photo of the façade of this fantastic place in my journal made up of Parisian memories. This place is a must see for those who plan to explore Paris, book-lover or not.

She has a pretty face but she's also beautiful. You can't say that about a lot of pretty girls nowadays.

Sylvia Beach was British, not American.

Really a great video! I love so much Shakespeare and Company, an enchanting place where I spent lovely afternoon surrounded by books when I am in Paris... it's the library of my heart!

I discovered this bookshop when living and working as an au Pair in Paris in 1981.

On my first visit into the store... a day I was feeling particularly lonely for home... I met the owner George. I specifically remember him saying to me. "You will never be lonely if you have books in your life"... and it made me smile to hear Sylvia Whitman repeat the sentiment here.

    Thank you!
