You can calculate the root for any number on paper, without computer nor calculator with Maclaurin series.

5 years old, I can't believe it.
-
ok, now make another video calculating root -1.
:D
-
now that's funny!
-
how can you change a square root to a decimal?
-
how can I symling square root of 32 to fragment?
-
ya i learned it in 5th grade
-
yeah! :) I wasn't joking, we really did learn that back then..schools are kind of hard here compared to the rest of the world...dont know why they do it, but eh, if it helps me later in life, i dont mind

You guys learns than in elementary school?!? We arent learning Pythagorean Theorem for a couple more days.
A bit lengthy, and I would have chosen a more interesting application than just calculating sqrt(2) for it's own sake. With a little bit of algebra you can construct a regular pentagon with ruler and compass. But you can't for instance construct the third root of 2 by this means, which can be shown with some work and a bit of field theory.

This is just using string, markers, and some knitting needles to hold the string. It does not use any other measuring instruments.
