Dark, dark song. Very sarcastic. Degrading. Disrespectful. I get it. To a kid, your parents, teachers, the people around you seem dead. "It's just imagination they lack!"

1st song I ever knew was by S&G. Beautiful and will always be special to me.

would you bite me?

This song came after Simon and Garfunkel broke up and reunited which would take place a hundred times over, talent personified like no others!

@FOOFOOKITTY Agreed again! :)

@buyerofsorts I didn't know where or how Paul Simon grew up, but IF he grew up as you say then his ability to so poignantly express the emotions of someone struggling IN one and desperately wanting out ... well, we already agreed this is brilliant!

@FOOFOOKITTY Regardless if Paul actually experienced what he wrote about in that song, he did embody the feelings of a lot of people that have big ambitions and are somewhat "stuck" in a small town. My girlfriend felt that way growing up in Cold Water Mi. And I agree, the song is angry, beautiful and brilliant! :)

@FOOFOOKITTY But Paul grew up in New York and then spent a lot of time in London. Perhaps while touring, he ran into some people in smaller towns that he thought were prety lame and therefore came up with "Dead and dying". I used to live in a small town called Deming in New Mexico and I'll tell ya, most of the people there were happy to work at Burger King their entire lives and go nowhere and do nothing. I always read that his relationship with his Dad was pretty good actually. Continued below.

@buyerofsorts I DID!! I couldn't believe I'd never heard it! As for Simon's brilliance ... it's like ALL brilliance - a gift. I think this song says volumes about Simon's ambition and resentment at what he considered the dead condition of his "little town!" People wonder about his relationship with his father - who knows if it was good or bad - Simon's just angered that he's nobody but his "father's son" in this place. He's nobody in his "little town." Angry, beautiful, brilliant!
personally, this is my favorite song by simon and garfunkel. The chorus blows my mind

twitching like a finger on the trigger of a gun. Absolutely brillant lyric. As good as any lyric I have ever heard. Underappreciated song.
