  • I don't need to do any research on the topic, and what I stated is quite accurate, e.g., Latin, Greek & Germanic Languages generally are all both contemporaries of each other as well as being descended from the parent tongue generally called Indo-European. The latter term is not a "classification" or grouping of languages except in parentage. However, if you think you have the topic in hand, more power to you.

    Cheers,

    J

  • That's an informative use of wikipedia. But there's a few flaws in your "argument"

first, Latin branched off from Greek during the Roman empire. Which were using Greek as it's main written language prior.

Further more, Indo-European is a "family group" of languages including Dutch, German, English, greek and so on. It's not one main parent language. :]

    *shrugs* old topics are boring.

  • Actually, Latin is not the ancestor of English. English is a descendant mainly of two West Germanic languages, Engle and Saxon specifically. West German, parallels Latin in time. Both are descended from a parent language called Indo-European. Indo-European is so called due to Sanskrit (India) and Latin being the first two languages recognized as being from a common source.

English does have many loan-words from Latin, Greek and other languages. But the core of the tongue is Germanic.
