As a cat man, I sure appreciated this opening as I had an all black short haired tom, "Marshall McLuhan" in the late 60s. My younger sister has several black toms and they are great affectionate pets.

The lyrics were only sung at the end of the movie so that the dramatic impact of the score would set the tone of the movie. Also the movie, if I remember takes place in New Orleans and the opening score gives the jazz flavor with the dramatic overtones.

    hebneh,

Your memory is correct. The version to which you refer was by jazz organist Jimmy Smith. I'm surprised that no one has uploaded it here.

I wondered why there was a credit for "Vocals" by Brook Benton, until the final credits were shown, which is when he sings.

I think the better-known version of this theme song was an instrumental, but hearing the words again just now made me remember hearing the vocal version back in the '60s.

Interesting. May have to track this movie down, if it is available

But to save you all some time, the last two minutes of this video is just a still of the black cat staring back at you. Why they gave us two minutes of that, some one else will have to explain.

One of Stanwyck's best movies. Capucine was spectacularly beautiful. Fonda superb.
