Making a stainless steel knife I saw on a web site. The site had basic guidance as to how to make it so I thought I would give it a go.... Turned out pretty well!

  • Nice knife

  • @TheXENitz Thanks...

  • @garyhuston ur welcome, are they easy to make for beginners ?

  • @TheXENitz if you have a reasonable knowledge of the basic hammering skills then yes, if you are a real blacksmithing novice I would probably start with something a bit more basic. If you have the time and materials, go for it, practice makes perfect!

  • Great looking knife Gary. Can you easily temper stainless in the shop?

  • @slacktub I don't temper it at all! I don't know what grade this is but it is pretty hard so I don't bother....

  • @garyhuston Yea thanks, The only problem i have is that i dont have a forge.. So im going to buy one soon hopefully.. But thank you for the answer.

  • @RodneyLeonard Very good question! I have deadened the ring by mounting the anvil firstly in an angle iron frame which has 3/8" of rubber in the bottom. Really dense rubber which doesn't give much. Then it's welded onto a tube full of expanding foam, which is welded to more angle iron that is bolted to the floor through a plank of 2" wood! Easy!!

  • Excellent video.I have many questions but the first one that comes to mind is how come your hammering doesn't produce a loud, ringing sound? Some videos I've seen by other smiths have been difficult to watch because of the sound of the anvil.

  • @garyhuston How about a cane handle. Like the metal topper on a cane the elderly might use to help them to get around. I know you made that Ran's Head topper for a walking stick. That was more for decoration than function though. Door Knocker. Weather Vane or a Symbol/Animal for the top of one. Fireplace Tools. The handles could be from multiple smaller rounds twisted together, then would separate out for a handle and still follow the twist of the shaft then combine at the very end.
