Puccini, die altijd een zwak had voor de nieuwste technische snufjes, werd ook zeer gefascineerd door de nieuwe wereld en alle vernieuwingsmogelijkheden die deze hem zou kunnen bieden. Het lag dan ook voor de hand dat hij ooit een opera op Amerikaans grondgebied zou situeren. Alle vernieuwingsdrang ten spijt wordt in de eerste wildwest-opera niettemin de aloude driehoeksverhouding ten tonele gevoerd van één vrouw tussen twee mannen: de één een charismatische misdadiger en de ander een corrupte hoeder van de wet. In een reeks genrescènes schetst de componist een contrastrijk beeld vol uiterlijke hardheid en emotionele diepgang, waarbij de zangstijl overwegend declamatorisch is. Met de redding van de gangster door een vrouw die zich weliswaar in een mannenwereld staande houdt maar vooralsnog ongekust is, en hun gezamenlijke weg naar de vrijheid besluit de opera welhaast als een onvervalste Hollywoodfilm: het happy end betekent de definitieve vlucht in de illusie.

Call me American, but I prefer a production that is actually set at the time of the 1849 gold rush. See the operaaustralia page on here to view a production that is traditional in its setting, but innovative in how it presents that setting. Why is Minnie transformed into a Hollywood movie goddess at the end? I understand the dollars coming down as representing the "get rich" culture of the US, but why at the end when the lovers are leaving California and the gold rush?

Really wish we had the pleasure of seeing Eva-Marie this season at San Francisco as both Sieglinde and Minnie; she is perfectly suited for this role!
