This is a part of Dutch history. In the Netherlands, in the Golden Age, it was a normal practice, to adapt foreign songs to our own culture.
These songs were contrafacted, that is, they received a Dutch text. This song is called "la Monica"
A standard work about this is the book by Louis Peter Grijp: Het Nederlands lied in de Gouden Eeuw.
I hope to have some time to read it, but I am afraid that I have to stop making these videos for that....

  • Yes sure, in the film it is extremely touching. (watch on youtube: watch?v=NJ9xqBsROBQ)

I also recorded a keyboard version from the susanne van soldt book a time ago

  • this is the song the daughters of saint colombe sang in 'tous les matins du monde'... and i so LOVE it!!! i'd love to find a choral version of it or a longer orchestral version of it -- it's one of the great melodies of music literature...
