No, as i said @3:20 that is the mixdown stage done. You could then send it off for mastering or do it yourself and i show you how to boost volume for yourself. Its not mastering.

Really nice tutorial! It has helped me a lot. However, I remain slightly confused...

I see that you add EQ, compression and limiting at the end and you still refer to it was "mixing down". If this is mixing down, what is mastering? I'd really appreciate your help on this!

Yea the EQ, compression and limiting at the end is NOT apart of the mixdown process. Its a kinda poor mans mastering.

The mixdown is all about balancing the various sounds. hope that helps

Its hard to get the most out of a mixing video when its posted at 480p. Decent tutorial otherwise.

I know I may be rewritting things but in my book, mastering has more to do with a new pair of ears hearing a final project, and adding what it needs to be final, vs what is actually done at ,mastering. In the most ideal of situations the masterer will not have to EQ, or 'fix things.' EQ, balance, and (if needed) any final mix compression are perfected at mixdown. The mastering engineer then listens to the final project as a whole, sets volume, limits, etc and makes the final presentation..

Really interesting tutorial, one quick question though, how much make up gain do you normally put on your Bus comp on the master channel, do you say put 2 Db on it if you are getting an average of 2 DB gain reduction or do you use more?

I would say that putting a compressor in the master fader when bouncing the mix down is still mixing, when used in this way, ie, to blend the sound as a whole. Actually the compressor he is using is the ssl bus compressor, so many songs you hear on the radio were mixed through that one. That's part of most studios' industry-standard ssl mixing boards, and many mixes get printed through it. well done!

A great tutorial. Thank you. Funny enough, I just read a post at the gearslutz forum by a man who stated he found the secret to getting "warmth" out of a digital recording. He basically said "turn everything down", just as you did :-). I will definitely be trying this style out, although I dont really make dance, this is still informative.
