A great English icon visited an Aussie one when Stephen Fry came to the Sydney Opera House to discuss travel, language, the three W's (Wilde, Waugh and Wodehouse) and everything in between, in a 90 minute talk-fest. The night involved a cracking 45 minute chat by Fry and then a 45 minute Q&A with First Tuesday Book Club's Jennifer Byrne.

A true polymath and the epitome of a Renaissance Man, Stephen Fry is a natural treasure in his native land of England. A writer, presenter, social commentator, satirist, actor and TV personality, Fry's diverse interests and enthusiasms have seen him become one of a small handful of global cultural figures who have a significant presence in every form of media; radio, TV, film, print and online.

Better known for playing the lead in the film Wilde, Fry was Melchett in the Blackadder television series and is the host of the ABC TV quiz show, QI. He also presented the television series Stephen Fry In America, which saw him travelling across all 50 U.S. States in a London cab.

Apart from his work in television, Fry has contributed columns and articles for newspapers and magazines, and has written four novels and an autobiography, Moab Is My Washpot and appears frequently on BBC Radio.

Fry wields considerable influence through his use of the social networking site Twitter and is frequently asked to promote various charities and causes, often inadvertently causing the host website to crash due to the sheer volume of traffic generated by his large number of followers.

  • Stephen saying "Shut the fuck up" is simply the most charmingly hilarious thing I've ever heard.

  • @Danazawa If he's not your Cup of Tea then thats fair enough, we can't all be into the same thing. But I think a reason why he has so much goodwill is because lot of what he says, especially on his Views about Religion and very open-minded opinions about a lot of other things, a great deal of Pople agree with. Not to mention his gentlemanly way of expressing his opinions which People relate to. He's nto loudmouthed or anything, which People respect.

  • This is a lot of banal waffle, there is so much goodwill towards Fry that he gets away with it, but it isn't funny or clever.

  • It's comforting to see someone who's a lot more successful in life than me who still hasn't managed to keep his hair from looking silly.

  • @Concordski101 This man far outranks the Queen, honestly.

  • @Concordski101 I thought he can't be knighted, because he has a minor criminal record? Is that a thing?

Although some people say he was offered, but rejected it.

    1) Cri du Chat syndrome involves a deletion of part of chromosome 5, not the removal of multiple chromosomes.

    2) Its main clinical manifestation is severe mental retardation with an average IQ of less than 20. Therefore by referencing it in my reply was absolutely inferring you were 'dim' or 'stupid' by association. I did not call you a 'retard' or a 'spaz'.

    3) By failing to comprehend the above you don't help your argument against this inference.
