Widor’s first four organ symphonies, published as Opus 13, were completed by 1872, less than two years after he assumed his duties as titular organist of the magnificent Cavaillé-Coll at St. Sulpice. Here we listen to the 3rd Movement of the 3rd Symphony, the 'Marcia': a glorious, colorful and assertive piece of organ music. Wonderful interpretation by Ben van Oosten who has choosen one of the finest Cavaillé-Coll for this brilliant recording.

C-C's philosophy created more tonal capabilities: 8' Montre and 8' Flute harmonique, could be considered the major ranks, with the 8' Bourdon and 8' Gamba/Salicional/Violoncelle-d­epending on the division these stops are located-could be the minor chorus. Montres exhibit some of the octave, while the Flute harmonique has a trace of the sub-octave. Pulling both gives you a new, full tone. Bourdons with an arched upper lip creates quintiness. Gambas or Sals 'fill' the upper harmonic train.

I believe I heard Daniel Roth explain once that Widor was the "Provisional" organst at St. Sulpice, not "titular" organist, as lllmozartlll mentioned previously. One of the critical elements of a C-C organ is the efficiency with which he created with much less (in the total number of ranks/stops) than that of English and American organs. A 30-rank C-C organ is more versatile than a 75 rank Willis. Probably 2/3's of the power of C-C organs is from the 16'/8' trumpet and trumpette harmonique

Great post! I have loved this March since a friend introduced me to it years ago. It is not played often enough. I have 2 versions of this symphony, an earlier version with a much shorter March movement. Very useful for processionals when you need all that naughty noise! Predictable but still very grand symphonic ending.
