Here are two examples for Takeda Ryu Iaido competition from the tournament in July 2008. 2nd fight was the final with a lot of drama at the last round.
Rules:
best of 7 rounds. Always 2 techniques (one single handed and one doublehanded) must be performed correctly, otherwise the round is lost. Quicker technique wins, when equal strategic body movement can decide the round.
1st round: noto first
2nd round: red attacks, white defends
3rd round: white attacks, red defends
4th round: from hajime
5th round: noto first
6th round: from hajime
7th round: noto first
Enchosen (sudden death): noto first
If both competitors make mistakes or both hit at the same time it is called Aiuchi.
Enjoy the drama!

  • do you do sparring in iaido? i mean like fighting? every video i find about iaido is just katas and presentation. i guess if i want to have real fights i have to do kendo am i right?

  • @ASIRA89 What you see on this video is a competition example of Takedaryu Iaido, called Batto shiai!

It is performed on large distance and 3 judges look if the techniques were correct, who was the faster one and who had a strategic advantage.

  • they obviously have a designed kata each round but only the fastest win, nothing about how good was made he technic? I'm curious to know.

  • They don´t have a designed kata. They can choose from the whole technical repertoire, but as usual in competition people develop their favorite combinations. The quality of the technique is checked by 4 judges. Both techniques must be correctly executed and stopped at the right moment. (no swinging through from 1st to 2nd waza). Even the correct voice and body movement is checked. Sorry, but I don´t have enough letters to explain the criteria in detail! Thanks for the interest!

  • The different rounds are described in the text. There are 3 different types of round:

noto kata: means you have to make noto first (blade at least half inside the saya)

senko kata: sente attacker and kote defender are announced, sente starts within 2 seconds of the command, defender must do a block or a batto with an taisabaki in reaction to the attack.

batto kata: both attack from the command

It is a best of 7 match.

  • ...and of course: if one of the both the techniques is not correct there is no point given. If both make mistakes no point will be given in this round.

  • Looks challenging! Thanks for sharing

  • Really enjoyed this vid. Do you have some form of official rules for this type of competition? Saw the notes below the vid (which are helpful) but looking for something a little bit more detailed. If so, would you be willing to share that info? Thanks in advance!

  • Shit these are dangerous. We also do this in our dojo but we use real sharp swords...

  • Iaido is a good form to use and understand the samurai sword proper cuts and all that jazz and don't get me wrong is cool but like ASIRA89 said is only form no fighting or sparring i took Iaido for 2 years and then move on when i saw all i was learning was what i already knew then move on to bigger things and more fun ones as well :) Kendo is really good but again is sport like but you will learned alot there when it comes to combat

  • ._. this kinda reminds me of kendo

  • @ASIRA89 There is no sparring in Iaido - modern or classical schools.........and I've never ever seen any senior Iai Sensei do anything like this. With correct form comes speed - sorry but I can't see either with in this?

  • what is this competitive form meant to teach you ? and is there a form of competitive full contact ?
